Maybe it's time to backup and talk about the characters themselves. Maybe I've said too much about the endgame of Cold Prey already. but that person would be too old for this reign of terror. There's also an element of misdirection through the film, as if we're supposed to finger one person in particular to be behind the ski mask. To say the audience is ahead of the characters isn't a knock on them in any way it's a simple matter of fact. In fact, they don't have it all until the very end of the picture. And that's all right in the long run, because these young people don't have the information necessary to put the pieces together. During the aforementioned credits sequence, information is presented in the form of news footage which will help astute viewers unravel the story long before the characters have any chance of doing the same. That's why Cold Prey is an intelligent piece of filmmaking. They do just about everything right and it still isn't good enough for some of them to live. ![]() (All this information is implied through a credits-sequence montage and final revelation with precious little dialogue to connect the dots for the audience.) There are relatively few moments in which the characters can be called brain dead they run through their possible avenues of escape to find none are open to them. There is no over-thinking the plot or half-baked psychological mumbo-jumbo about the Big Bad's (BB from here on out) motivation. ![]() The genius part of this movie is its complete willingness to understand, not to mention embrace, the genre in which it is working.
